|Sunburn| can be characterized by red, painful, swollen skin; blisters if the burn is severe; and can be accompanied by chills and |fever|. The best thing you can do for a |sunburn| is to apply cold compresses or bathe in cool water. An oatmeal bath will soothe the skin and reduce inflammation (scatter a cup of dry instant oatmeal in a tub of cool water and soak for awhile). Take |acetaminophen| for pain. Greasy substances such as baby oil or after-sun creams will only seal in the heat. Take plenty of fluids. If the pain is severe or if you become feverish and ill, call your doctor.
